Masters (of the universe)
Our Masters membership is open to any adult over the age of 19+ who wants to swim, run, surf, paddle, laugh and train with a bunch of like-minded people. We run everything from open water swims round the north devon coastline through to beginner sessions for anyone looking to get back into the water after years away.
We have grown our Masters section of the club hugely in recent years by making sure that we offer training for everyone in the water – not just experienced swimmers.
Even the official SLS term ‘Masters’ implies a ‘mastery’ not all of us have! Our aim with the development programme we have in place is to get everyone swimming faster and more confidently.
Aside from the swimming and SLS training below, we also get out on surf skis and in the club surfboat. Take a look at the ‘What we do’ section to find out more.
Pool sessions - Ilfracombe Pool (October to April)
8,30-9.30pm Wednesday - drills
3.45-4.45pm Sunday intermediate swimmers - coached
We have two lanes of Masters swimming. This is for intermediate swimmers – those who can swim 400m without stopping and would like to improve their technique and speed targeting asub 7m30s - 9 min 400m (lifeguard/lifesaver qualification time). There will be technique drills and some set swimming.
4.45-6pm Sunday beginners and experienced - coached
We have 1 lane of beginner masters for those who cannot yet complete 400m without stopping, who are new to the water or who just haven’t swum in an age and would like to get back into it.
We have 3 lanes of more advanced masters – those able to swim 400m in less than 7m30s. These sessions will be geared towards improving technique, speed and stamina.
Please note there will be no uncoached lane for swimming on a Sunday, all lanes will be taking part in a coached session.
Beach sessions - Croyde Beach (May to September) - Meeting at the club hut by the National Trust carpark
7-9pm Monday, experienced Masters (suitable for anyone who is comfortable in the sea and has some basic fitness - you don't need to be insanely-fit)
7-9pm Tuesday, a beginners session aimed at getting people back in the water in a supportive environment, complete with club lifeguards. This kicks off Tuesday 9 May and is open to anyone - email Lyn to book your place
Winter circuit training/keep fit sessions - Croyde Village Hall, Monday, 7.15-8.30pm followed by gentle yoga 8.30-9.30, suitable for all abilities.
Our popular Monday night circuit training sessions run all through the winter. All fitness levels are welcome, and it’s a great way to stay fit through the cold, dark months and have a laugh as well. We’re delighted to offer an hour of yoga afterwards too.
